NOTES: Kunio Miyagawa was born in 1933. He started creating kokeshi around 1948. Multi prize winner in kokeshi competitions including the coveted Prime Minister Award for this doll set!
The doll's name is "Aiai" (藹藹) or Harmony and won the Prime Minister Prize in 1981. There should have been a signature board but didn't find it with the shipment.
The design covers the whole body and was done by the burnt wood technique. There is extremely small design details on the vest. Areas which have dimension include the whole vest, large arm openings in the vest (realistic), the scarves with the fringe carved, the kimono sleeves, the obi, the fold in the kimono under the obi and the crossed over kimono panel. Very easy to see why it won top prize. The winning dolls were made of elm so I'm guessing this set is also.
