Antique Japanese dolls depicting a much loved fairy tale, Momotaro, The Peach Boy. In brief, the story is of a childless older couple who come upon a large peach. When they open it, out pops Momotaro. He eventually goes off to fight the ogres and becomes a hero. Extremely rare set as it includes Momotaro. The dolls are usually of the couple only. The age is Taisho Period (1912-1926). The case is unusual in itself. Cases were first made during Taisho Period and this is probably an early case. It has metal rods for the corners, hinges holding the back pane in place and measures (at the base) 10-1/2" x 5-1/2" and is 10" high. The dolls measure 5-3/4", 4-1/2" and 2-1/2". The eyes are glass, the finish is gofun and the expressions, priceless. Both have their mouths open and teeth can be seen. The male has his hand cupped which means he may have once held something, a walking stick, an axe or knife? The case has a few chips in the lacquered finish. The dolls are in excellent condition.
