NAME: Creative Japanese kokeshi

MAKER: Yoshio Otani*

SIZE: 11-3/4" (30cm), head diameter is 3-3/4" (9.5cm)

CONDITION: Small dents around the various edges of the body. Large dent toward the bottom in the back. Some smudges and light dirt.

NOTES: Hefty doll. The body is made up of three pieces. The middle section is a slice of tree with the bark left intact. Probably tells a story as there is some writing on the top front of the doll.

*I saw this doll with what was probably the original box and it clearly stated the name Yoshio Otani. Since the doll is not signed it cannot be stated as a fact but it's a pretty good bet. Yoshio Otani was born in 1936 and started making kokeshi in 1968 so the dates fit that this may be of his make. He won multi-awards including the Prime Minister Prize.
