Antique Japanese Samurai Doll, Taisho
Sold
NAME: Antique Japanese Samurai costume doll, sword & sword stand and original wood box, no lid
AGE: Taisho period (1912-1926)
SIZE: Doll is 10-3/4" (27.2cm) tall including his hat. The stand measures 13-3/8" x 9-1/8" x 2-1/2" (34cm x 23.2cm x 6.3cm)
CONDITION: During shipping, the doll broke off at the ankles and received some damaged. It suffered a dent on the forehead which cracked the gofun. The picture was taken at an angle where it can be readily seen. From the front, it looks like a hairline crack. The hat also was scraped up along the seams.
The original wood box is not in very good condition. The wood is separating, there are several large cracks on top, a side support is missing, there is bug damage and there is no lid.
NOTES: Quality doll. It has the traditional gofun finish. The hands, with individual fingers, are carved wood. The beautiful stand is persimmon wood.
This will ship parcel post at no extra charge to U.S. addresses. The post office will charge a surcharge for priority on this item because of the oversized box. You are welcome to upgrade shipping to priority for the approximate $30 difference. If you don't want the box, it can probably go regular priority as the package will be smaller and substantially less weight.
Just an observation on Japanese dolls. . . Dolls I have seen on the internet are not all dated or described correctly. A premium can be asked for older dolls and are thus marked. There are very few marked "Taisho" and many called "Meiji" dolls. I had heard years ago that the older dolls were growing scarce. It is important to know what you are looking for if you want an Edo, Meiji or Taisho period doll and not go by what's marked, the seller or the price. Learn the difference between the high quality, regular and the folk doll and the differences in the age periods. There are many books on Japanese dolls to help with this.
