  • Antique Japanese Costume Dolls, Empress & Retainer Antique Japanese Costume Dolls, Empress & Retainer

Antique Japanese costume doll of the Empress and her Retainer on a wooden base from Taisho period (1912-1926). Would have been displayed for Girl's Day (formerly March 3rd, now combined with boys day and celebrated as Children's day on May 5).

The empress measures 7" including her crown, wears a kimono with hand embroidered birds on the front and holds a fan. Her retainer stands at 6-1/4" and holds a closed umbrella. The base measures 9-3/4" x 3-3/4", painted black with gold painted design on the front.

The faces are made of gofun (ground egg shell in Taisho period, ground oyster shell in earlier periods). The hands and feet are carved wood and the eyes are glass.

The condition is good for the age. The empress' crown is missing a wire and bead. She has a hairline crack that runs from her lower left cheek to under the chin. The retainer has age spots on his clothing, a little on the sleeves but mostly around the shoulder area. There is a small gouged area on the stand that is varnished which indicates it was there when originally made.
