  • Antique Japanese Costume Doll, "Jicho" Set Antique Japanese Costume Doll, "Jicho" Set

NAME: Antique Japanese costume dolls of three Jicho or "janitors", original wood box.

AGE: c1930

SIZE: The dolls measure about 4-3/4" high (12.3cm) and around 5" (12.5cm) across. The stand measures 17-3/4" x 6-1/4 x 1".

CONDITION: The set shows it's age. Their clothes are discolored, have age spots and some soiling. Their heads and hands also have soiling. (Some was removed but more detailed work needs to be done with a soft pencil eraser or rubbing with a soft cloth). The tail end of the hair that is tied up on the happy doll has broken off and there is a chip in the finish where it is missing, which might have been glued.

The sad doll's right foot had broken and the repair was not good. Old glue is all over the area including on the stand and maybe his hand. There are some chips in the finish around the crack lines and on the bottom of the foot. It won't clean off this many years later. His clothes show the most spots. You can see this a little better in his pictures.

Two of the tools are missing, a dustpan and rake. There are three pieces of wood with carved design on one end of which I don't know if it belongs with the set or where they would go.

The stand has a stain (old glue), dents and scratches. Three strings are attached whose purpose in unknown.

The box is missing pieces, has cracks and is basically falling apart. It would be better to ship without it. If it crushes in transit, it can do a lot of damage but it's the buyer's choice.

I have no pets but apparently whoever packed it has pets. There is pet hair on and about the original packing material.

NOTES: This trio would not be displayed with a normal hina set. They have been referred to as "drunk". They have great expressions, angry, happy and sad (crying). Two of the dolls have their mouths open and you can see their teeth & tongues. Hands/fingers are finely carved.

Not in the best condition but still a well done, interesting, humorous set. I was unaware of most of the difficulties when it was purchased and, therefore, the markup is very modest. NO RETURNS WILL BE ACCEPTED ON THIS ITEM.

SHIPPING: This will ship to U.S. customers via standard mail (parcel post) insured unless the box is dumped. Then it will mail priority. You are welcome to pay the difference in shipping to priority which will be an additional $30.00.

INTERNATIONAL CUSTOMERS: Shipping on this doll will cost up to US$66 less the cost of U.S. shipping of $20 or US$46 additional. If the wood box is dumped, shipping will be substantially less. Please contact us with intent to buy so that it can be packed, weighed and the extra shipping charges added BEFORE the purchase is made.
