Two pairs of vintage carved figures by the Ainu of Hokkaido. Ainu are the native ethnic group in Hokkaido, the northest region of Japan. They are a distinct ethnic group based on a Shaman religion. The Smithsonian recently put together a very interesting exhibit on the Ainu.
These are part of a family collection of folk crafts from the 50's and 60's. The father traveled to all parts of Japan on business and would bring home souvenirs for the family.
The taller set measures 5-3/4" and has been carved out of a squarish piece of wood. There are a few minor dents on the male. The smaller pair measures 2-3/8" tall and the design was carved while leaving some of the bark intact. Over time, the bark has dried and some of the paper thin outer layer on the male has flaked off. A little of the underlayer has also chipped off around the carved areas.
